Student Guild Elections: Presidential Debate + Q&A

All QUT students welcome!

Join us for an engaging and revealing Presidential debate and Q&A as part of the 2024 QUT Guild Student Elections. This event is a fantastic opportunity to hear from the candidates running for the QUT Guild President position.

Event details: Wednesday, 16 October 5 to 7pm @ O-603 Gardens Point

Make sure to register for the event here.

Each candidate will be participating in a discourse about the challenges facing university students at QUT, and on a state and national level. Hear about their experiences and their thoughts around how they might deliver solutions to these challenges.

Glass Editor, Tione Zylstra (our resident political girly), will be moderating the event; she will be asking the questions and ensuring each candidate gets equal time to present their ideas.

The rules for the debate are designed to ensure fairness and clarity. Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to every question, with each being given equal time to present their positions. After all candidates have answered the initial question, the moderator will open the floor for responses and follow-ups, but no one is allowed to speak over one another. The moderator will ensure that the discussion remains civil and orderly.

To maintain fairness, all candidates will be provided with the same set of questions in advance, giving them equal preparation time for the topics to be covered.

Each candidate will be asked the following questions:

  1. Tell us about your ticket/party – what are your team’s values and collective goals?
  2. Are you a member of any political party? Is yes, which party are you aligned with, and how will the party’s political values influence your presidency?
  3. What are the biggest challenges facing university students today, both at QUT and on a state and national level?
  4. Specific topics (this will depend on our candidate responses and student questions) have been highlighted as the most important issues facing students – what solutions would you provide as President of the QUT Guild to address these problems?
  5. The Guild famously has a lack of engagement issue – how would you increase awareness of the Guild, and encourage greater student involvement?

The event will also include a student-led Q&A; throughout the event, students will be able to submit questions through a QR code, which the moderator and other Glass editors will monitor. Questions can be directed towards all candidates or individual candidates. We will attempt to get through as many student questions as possible.

The debate and Q&A will finish by 7pm, however students are welcome to stay back to network and enjoy some light refreshments.

In person attendance from student observers is encouraged, however students will also be able to tune in online via Teams.

The event will only be open to current QUT students, so make sure you bring your ID card.

Don’t miss this chance to get to know your future student leaders and make an informed decision in the upcoming election!
