Michael Pendergast: Elevate candidate for Engineering Councillor & NUS Delegate

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

Hi, I’m Michael and I’m thrilled to be a part of Elevate and running to be one of the Engineering Faculty Councillors on the Guild’s SRC. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Urban Development (Urban & Regional Planning) and from what I can see, if elected I would be the first student from the School of Architecture and Built Environment to be given the opportunity to represent our faculty within the Guild. It’s an honour I wouldn’t take lightly.

I believe that the Guild can and should fight for what students believe in and for the rights they deserve, and provide the crucial services that alleviate the inequalities we face as students. I don’t believe the two are mutually exclusive.

I’ve spent most of my time at uni representing students and fighting for what I care for. I’ve been the Convenor of the Disability Collective over the past two years. In this time, I’ve led the Collective to achieve its highest membership in its history, started many important conversations about the state of disability rights at QUT, and fought for disability rooms to be created (one of which will hopefully be opening at the Kelvin Grove campus next year).

This election has the highest number of candidates in recent history, making it more important than ever for us as QUT students to think carefully before we vote. The future of our student union is at stake.

Together with the rest of the Elevate team, I hope you will give me your support in delivering a Guild that is run truly for students by students. A Guild that makes campus culture vibrant, provides genuine cost of living relief, and fights for student’s rights, like abolishing automatic fails on late assignment submissions.
