My name is Jordan McAlister, and I am running for Engineering Councillor for 2025. I am the only candidate that is not tied to a political party. I am solely focused on improving the lives of all engineering students, ensuring that each unit is weighted fairly, with the precedent that units should not have a high fail rate; If they do, as councillor I want to investigate why. In this position, I will increase access to resources with greater study spaces for engineering students alongside the acknowledgement of learning types to be factored into how units are designed.

I want the focus of this degree to be learning, rather than just surviving with the fear of course delays and greater debt. Campus culture is returning, and the connections we form in our degree are vital to success, thus I will provide personal assistance with acquiring internships, fostering relationships between companies and QUT students. I believe everyone studying engineering should care about this election, going into my final year I have experienced the shear stress, faults, and many virtues of QUT Engineering.

I know what needs to be improved and what would have made my cohorts life far easier over the last three years. The faculty itself has changed drastically; even for current first-years, everyone’s course structure looks contorted and contrived compared to what we were once given, so as councillor I want to have that level of honesty and guidance. As paying students we are owed that appropriate respect. How are we meant to thrive as engineers if we are going into each year completely blind? I believe the Guild is important as a source of real communication, but an organisation only succeeds with the right members. I am the right councillor to make engineering better.
