Hayang Lowlilo: Left Action Free Palestine! candidate for Business & Law Councillor and NUS Delegate

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

My name is Hayang and I’m running to be QUT’s Business and Law Councillor! I’ve been a student at the university for 3 years now and am particularly passionate about social justice. I believe that a position on the council is best used as a representative voice for the students with issues which are particularly important to them. Look at what’s been achieved this year alone. More than 600 students showed up to QUT’s Special General Meeting for Palestine, an action that couldn’t have been achieved without left-wing students in our student union. That’s why I’m running with Left Action Palestine this campaign season.

This is an opportunity for you to elect candidates who will act for not only your interests, but the interests of those most marginalised in the world. Our student unions should be places of fruitful political activity, not for advocacy of ‘new bars’ on campus. So, I’ll take this opportunity to emphasise that you should exercise your democratic right this campaign season by electing officials who have proven time and time again that they are willing to fight. Students have power!
