Well Glassies, election time is upon once again and so far, it’s looking like a big one!

With the upcoming president’s debate on Wednesday the 16th of October, students can expect to see candidates out and campaigning over both Kelvin Grove and Gardens point campuses. You may ask, “Why is this important to me?’ Well your vote can help shape the student experience and will ensure your voice is heard in shaping the future of QUT and the Guild.

So, how does one prepare for a student election? Well, we’ve prepared an 8-step guide to get you through the 2024 QUT Guild Student Election and make your vote count:

1. Understand the Roles and Responsibilities

Before you cast your vote, it’s important to understand the different Guild
positions up for election and what they entail. Whether it’s President, Treasurer, or   Women’s Officer, the responsibilities of each role helps you make an informed decision about which candidates are best suited for the job.

2. Research the Candidates

Take the time to get to know the candidates. Read their statements, attend their campaign events, and follow their social media pages. We want you to look for candidates who share your values and have clear, actionable plans for the university issues you care about. You can read this years candidate statements here.

3. Attend the president’s debate on Wednesday the 16th October

The presidential candidates will participate in a debate and Q&A session organised by Glass and the Guild. This event is an excellent opportunity to hear candidates discuss their platforms,
answer questions, and debate key issues. Your presence and participation can also help shape the discussion and bring up points that matter to you.

4. Engage with Campaign Materials

You’ll likely see candidates on campus distributing flyers, posters, and talking face-to-face to try secure your vote. We understand being approached by candidates who have a lot to say about student politics may not be for you. If this is the case, you may wish to engage with these materials either online or by reading their flyers to understand each campaign message better.

5. Discuss with Peers

Talk to your fellow students about the election and the candidates. Sharing opinions and insights can help you see different perspectives and make a more balanced decision. It’s also a great way to encourage more QUT students to get involved and vote.

6. Reflect on Your Values and Priorities

Consider what’s most important to you in a student representative. Whether it’s transparency, advocacy, event planning, or financial management, having a clear idea of your priorities will guide you in choosing the right Guild candidates.

7. Make Your Vote Count

On election day, make sure to vote. Each vote contributes to a representative and  inclusive student body. Your participation is key to ensuring that the Student Guild  represents the diverse voices and interests of the QUT community.

8. Encourage Others to Vote

Encourage your friends and peers to participate in the election. The more students who vote, the more representative and democratic the outcome will be. Your involvement as a voter is crucial in shaping the future of student life at QUT.

Well Glassies, there you have it. Your voice, your opinion, and your vote could help shape the future of student life at QUT. Remember, being prepared and informed not only empowers you as students to have an important influence over the future of our university but also strengthens the student community. Good luck and happy voting season!!
